The concept of choosing a “word of the year” is all about selecting a guiding principle or inspiring theme to shape your goals and actions for the year ahead. For me, it started back in 2018 when my word was “content.” That year, I really doubled down on creating lots of content across my channels, and it became a driving force throughout the year.

Different approaches to picking a word of the year

  • It can be a guiding principle that helps you evaluate new opportunities.
  • It can be an inspiring theme that you want to embody.

In the past, my words have included “elevate” in 2021 and “adapt” in 2020 (even though I didn’t end up making a video about that one).

Reflecting on 2024 and Personal Changes

2024 was a big year of transition for me. There was a major breakup of a 10-year relationship, which really shifted my perspective on both my personal and professional life. I also bought a condo, got a new car, and did some exciting new business ventures, including our first big Christmas show.

As I looked back on all those changes, I realized I had been working incredibly hard for years, and I needed to re-evaluate what I truly wanted my life to look like going forward – whether that was 1 year, 5 years, or 10 years from now. That’s when I started to hone in on the word that would guide me in 2025.

The Concept of “Now” and Its Impact on My Life

One day, as I was sitting at my desk, I started jotting down a bucket list of all the big travel experiences I wanted to have – things like visiting London, going to a Formula 1 race, and spending a month in Europe. And then I realized, why am I waiting? If these are truly things I want to do, I should start making them happen now. That’s when the phrase “if not now, then when?” really struck a chord with me. I didn’t want to keep putting off the things that were important to me.

So I ended up booking a ski trip that very weekend, even though my calendar was packed for the next few months. And you know what? It was amazing. I had so much fun, and I was proud of myself for just making it happen.

That experience solidified my word of the year for 2025: “Now.” It’s not about being reckless or living on the edge. It’s about stopping the waiting and procrastination, and taking action on the things that truly matter to me. If I want something, I’m going to do it now, rather than letting time slip away. Or, if now isn’t practical, start planning.
